If you listen to virtually any of the songs featured on Collin Clowes’ latest record, Blackbird, you’re likely to notice a certain vulnerability lurking within the material. This is no coincidence. As a teen, Clowes suffered liver failure, which eventually landed him in the confines of a Toronto hospital room for the better part of three months. Although he had dabbled in songwriting prior to his illness, the art took on a whole new significance after his release from the hospital. The songs featured on Blackbird illustrate and explore the experiences and struggles he’s lived through, revealing a fragile but undeniably special spark similar to that found in the work of the late Elliott Smith.
